Sottoponte is the typical contemporary Sicilian landscape. Ready-made burnt trash, scattered tubes for agriculture watering, and piles of plastic used for ephemeral greenhouse. It seems apocalyptic but it’s the actual scenario. If you want to make it more understandable, you can apply Gilles Clement’s Third Landscape definition “Third Landscape is made up of all the places neglected by human beings. These margins bring together a biological diversity that has not yet been classified as richness.” Well, actually for us the underbridge richness has been immediately evident. No people around, decent human-non-human ecosystem thriving and you know a lot of freedom.
